The Insider Guide to a Career in Book Publishing eBook Carin Siegfried Reviews
This is a great book for anyone to read if you are thinking about getting started in a career in publishing, or even if you just love books and wonder how the publishing industry works. There is so much more than just a writer writing a manuscript and an editor reading it. Production editors, acquisitions editors, slush piles, agents, sales people, lots of people have their hands in getting a book to the public, and this book gives a very good glimpse into that world.
I liked how Siegfried covered the different types of jobs in the publishing industry and added her own work experience to the chapters. She also covered preparing for a job,job search, job listing examples, resumes, cover letter and one I wouldn't think about is the thank you notes.
Her book is a great resource on its own but she gives you more resources to help you.
I love the glossary so you can look some of the book industry terms.
Love the book.
Carin does a wonderful job of simplifying different career paths in the publishing industry and highlighting the pros and cons of each. She weaves in practical descriptions of each job (and what you would be doing day by day), then gives really interesting pointers for what personalities would best suit each position. Her nifty glossary of industry terms in the back taught me a lot, as did her pointers on how to format things like cover letters and such.
I rate this a five for its brevity, accessibility, and its upbeat tone. It's a read that won't take you more than a day to finish, but that will give you a firm foundation for understanding the industry. Would recommend to anyone contemplating a publishing career path but unsure where they'd fit best, or for anyone who just wants to get a sense of the bigger picture with all the different pieces of the industry.
As a writer, I found Carin Siegfried’s book most insightful. Though I have no interest in pursuing a career in book publishing, I very much intend to work with the people who do, being as I hope to publish future books through traditional publishing houses. Siegfried’s style was just what I needed informative, but conversational; experienced, but inviting. By the end of the book, the publishing industry was no longer a big, scary monster with sharp fangs, but a friend. Thanks to the author, I not only gained a better understanding of job descriptions and the publishing process, but I also gained insight into how to make a good impression. And let's face it, for most of us writers, an insider's guide into how to shake that publisher's hand is nothing short of gold.
Clear, concise, and doesn't take up that much space on my bookshelf. I'm so glad to have this for my job search for publishing jobs.
Good
